behind the scenes

although i considered illustrating figurative representations of black queer individuals, i thought an abstract background would be more universal. i looked to the patterns of tutsi basketweaving, uli motifs, and adinkra symbols for inspiration.

drawing and arranging the patterns was an intuitive process. after accidentally skewing one while resizing it, i realized the transformation added an interesting depth to the image. 90s and early 00s minimalist graphics were the primary reference for the final color and font selections.
